I had a great time with the M family. Their little girl was darling and put on a brave face in spite of the cold. Here is a little taste from the session.

There is a spot in my kitchen that has beautiful light almost any time of day. It is also the spot where my youngest sits for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I therefore have nearly a hundred (I can’t help myself!) shots of him that are similar to these.

I met Cynthia through an email I sent out, looking for people who would be interested in birth photography. She is due in just a few weeks (and I am really excited to do a birth photography session with her), but she wanted to get some maternity pictures as well before it’s too late.
They are from Brazil and her mom came just a few days ago to help with the new baby. I wish I had been able to get more pictures of her mom. She was busy caring for their little guy (who was having a hard time and so was also absent from most of the pictures). They are such a sweet family. Check it out:

Backlighting has always scared me a little. It seems so difficult to get the correct exposure on the other parts of the image. This morning my youngest found a ladybug on the sidewalk in front of our house and it seemed like a perfect opportunity for me to experiment a little.

The sun was already kind of high in the sky so I had to use a pretty wide angle in most shots to get any sun flare. I was also laying prostrate on the sidewalk, blocking the path for several students on their way to campus. I think it was worth it though. What do you think?

This is the first of a series of posts I plan to do about great places to take pictures here in Provo, Utah. Since moving from perpetually-green Oregon (yes, also perpetually rainy – the cost of vegetation that looks alive), I’ve been looking for places around Provo that could be potential photoshoot locations (and that don’t involve anything dead, brown, or brittle). Spring is right around the corner but until then, here are a couple of places that will work for any season.

Exhibit A – Bluish-green Warehouse:

This is located at the end of my street so I kind of feel like I own it. Nevertheless I am sharing it with anyone else who does a search for “provo photo shoot locations” (like I did and came up with very little, by the way).

Exhibit B – Bright Orange Warehouse:

This is maybe one hundred feet away from the Blue Warehouse so imagine my delight when I found it (also on my street) while driving home.

Directions: From BYU campus, drive south on 500 E until you can’t drive anymore. The orange warehouse will be on your right and the blue one will be right in front of you.

We had a fantastic vacation last year at Big Bear and I got to take some pictures of my brother-in-law’s really cool Santa Monica-based family for their Christmas cards. I wish the photo session had lasted longer than 5 minutes but we still got some good ones.

Also, the colors initially may look random (and Rachel swears she didn’t plan this) but please notice the alternating red and black, the blue gloves and blue tights, the green gloves and green vest and the basic blacks and greys. From a design perspective? Sweet!

Look at those eyes! I can’t wait to get more of this little guy. Out of maybe 15 pictures I took, this was the only one that wasn’t fuzzy. Capturing kids between 12-24 months usually involves a lot of running around but I’ve got skills, thanks to my own 22-month old.

Note to potential clients: don’t get scared. I only took 15 pictures because Grant is my neighbor and I begged to borrow him for a minute. A real photography session would last much longer and would garner many more photos.

Last week I took some pictures of my sister-in-law for a campaign. She was running for MBASA (BYU MBA Spouse Association) president and she won! It was the picture, I know it.
